Smoking Popes formed in Crystal Lake, Illinois in 1990. Consisting of the three Caterer brothers - singer/guitarist Josh, bassist Matt and guitarist Eli - and drummer Mike Felumlee, the quartet set itself apart from its peers with an energetic blend of punk, pop, and rock, topped off by Josh Caterer's relaxed, crooning vocal style. The band developed a huge following and toured with other artists such as Foo Fighters and Morrissey. Unfortunately, the band broke up at the height of its popularity in 1999. Three of the original members have, however, gone on to form Duvall in 2001.
